Activity
Insecticide.Pymetrozine is a systemic insecticide active against motile forms of Hemiptera, including those with MACE and esterase resistance. It has no knockdown activity but crops are protected immediately because feeding ceases soon after ingestion; this is attributed to the product disabling the pests stylet. The insects die of starvation within a few days. The product is plant-systemic. It is readily taken up by leaves and roots and translocated around the plant; it exhibits excellent translaminar activity.  Pymetrozine has also demonstrated a reduction of TYLCV transmission by B tabacii (ie reduced vectoring capability) following foliar applications of pymetrozine to tomatoes. Further studies demonstrated that pymetrozine persists in crops for up to 14 days and should offer protection against the transmission of PLRV (potato leaf roll virus).

Use of a penetrative spray additive is recommended with all applications of Fulfill. The product is rainfast as soon as it has dried.

A minimum of 7 days is required between applications of pymetrozine with a period of 14 days before harvest. Use of the formulations Endeavor and Fulfill would be restricted to no more than two applications per crop at 20 g ai/hl and 96.5 g ai/ha, respectively. The use of the formulation Chess for use on protected pepper, tomato and aubergine is restricted to no more than three per crop and the latest time of application is three days before harvest.

Tests at Rothamsted Research found that aphids showing Modified AcetylCholinEsterase (MACE) resistance survived the winter weather. MACE- resistant aphids are immune to dimethyl carbamates primicarb and triazamate. Other organophosphates and carbamates are still effective. Plenum should be a major part of aphid control programmes if growers suspect MACE resistance. There is no known resistance to Plenum with this aphid. Early action will prevent resistant colonies taking hold in the crop and help ensure subsequent applications prove effective at controlling this and other aphids. Spray programmes should give good penetration of crop canopies and cover as much of the undersides of leaves as possible.
